LINCOLN -- According to Supreme Court Justice Lindsey Miller-Lerman, the Judicial Nominating Commission for Chief Justice of the Nebraska Supreme Court will hold a public hearing in the Supreme Court Courtroom in the State Capitol in Lincoln, Nebraska, beginning at 10:00 a.m. on October 4, 2024. At the hearing, the Commission will receive information on the qualifications of candidates to fill the vacancy in the office of Chief Justice due to the retirement of Chief Justice Michael G. Heavican effective October 31, 2024.
The 5th Judicial District Problem-Solving Court in Merrick County is set to hold a graduation ceremony and celebration on September 9, 2024. The event will take place at the Merrick County Courthouse in Central City, Nebraska, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
Chief Justice Mike Heavican will retire on October 31, 2024, after 18 years of service on the bench. His retirement letter to Governor Jim Pillen is attached below.
Kami Hooey, previously the Court Reporter at the Holt County Courthouse in O’Neill, has been selected to serve as the Rock and Boyd County court Clerk Magistrate in Bassett and Butte, respectively. Her official work as Clerk Magistrate began on July 1, 2024.

Buffalo County Adult Drug Court is set to celebrate its latest graduation on Tuesday, July 16, 2024. The event will take place at 10:00 a.m. in Courtroom 1 of the Buffalo County Courthouse, located at 1512 Central Avenue in Kearney, Nebraska. Judge John Marsh will preside over the ceremony.
Lisa Hunzeker, who previously worked at Southeast Community College and the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, has been selected to serve as both the Pawnee and Johnson County court Clerk Magistrate in Pawnee City and Tecumseh, respectively. Her official work as Clerk Magistrate begins on July 15, 2024.
Melodie T. Bellamy of Kearney, Matthew C. Boyle of Grand Island, Dale T. Callahan of Hastings, Timothy E. Hoeft of Holdrege, and John A. Sauder of Holdrege have submitted applications for the position of District Court Judge in the 10th Judicial District. This district includes Adams, Clay, Franklin, Harlan, Kearney, Nuckolls, Phelps, and Webster counties.
The Supreme Court will hold a proclamation ceremony on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. to announce the celebration of Nebraska Probation Week from July 21-27, 2024. The Judicial Branch ceremony will be held and streamed live from the courtroom in the State Capitol.
The Nebraska Supreme Court has appointed Marla Fischer as the Director of the Office of Public Guardian. Fischer, who currently serves as the Deputy Director of the Office of Public Guardian, has over nine years of experience with the Nebraska Judicial Branch. She will be responsible for overseeing guardian and conservator services throughout Nebraska in both urban and rural courts.

Johnson and Pawnee County Clerk Magistrate LaRita Weber recently submitted her notice of retirement, effective July 5, 2024, after nearly 24 years of service to the Judicial Branch.
