District court judge Matthew Neher announces resignation effective April 2025

Eleventh Judicial District Judge Matthew D. Neher has announced his resignation, effective April 4, 2025. Neher, who is based in Lexington, Nebraska, serves the Eleventh Judicial District which includes Arthur, Chase, Dawson, Dundy, Frontier, Furnas, Gosper, Hayes, Hitchcock, Hooker, Keith, Lincoln, Logan, McPherson, Perkins, Red Willow and Thomas counties.

In a letter to the Governor of Nebraska announcing his decision to step down from the bench after less than two years in office since his appointment on November 17th of 2023. Neher expressed gratitude for the opportunity he had been given: “I am very thankful for the opportunity you provided me when you appointed me to serve as a District Court Judge. I have learned so much during my time in this position and will take with me the lessons that I have learned.”

The process to determine whether Neher’s departure will create a judicial vacancy begins with a meeting called by the Judicial Resources Commission. This commission assesses judicial workload statistics to decide if filling Neher's position is necessary.

The State of Nebraska's judicial power is divided among several courts including the Supreme Court and district courts like those in which Neher served. These courts operate under the administrative direction of the Supreme Court. The state also features separate juvenile courts located in Douglas County Lancaster County Sarpy Counties as well as a statewide Workers’ Compensation Court.
