The Judicial Nominating Commission for the Seventh Judicial District in Nebraska is seeking additional candidates to fill a district court judge vacancy following the retirement of Judge Mark A. Johnson. This development comes after the commission's initial public hearing on March 14, 2025, where they could not agree on advancing two candidate names to the Governor as required by Article V, § 21(1) of the Nebraska Constitution.
Supreme Court Justice John R. Freudenberg announced that a second public hearing will take place on April 23, 2025, at the Madison County Courthouse in Madison, Nebraska. The commission will review qualifications for candidates interested in filling this judicial position.
Interested individuals can access the Judicial Vacancy Application package through the Nebraska Judicial Branch website. Completed applications must be submitted by April 2, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. CST either electronically or via hard copy as specified in the application instructions. Applicants are advised to ensure timely delivery and correct submission details since errors may not generate notifications.
Following the application deadline, a public notice will be issued listing candidates and detailing how to provide testimony or submit information to the commission during the upcoming hearing.
