6th Judicial District seeks new judge after Steven Sword's appointment

The Trial Court Vacancy Commission has announced it is accepting applications for a vacancy in the 6th Judicial District Criminal Court. This follows the appointment of the Honorable Steven Sword to the appellate bench.

The vacancy covers Knox County. To be eligible, applicants must be licensed attorneys in Tennessee, at least 30 years old, have been residents of the state for at least five years, and must reside in the relevant Judicial District.

The Commission stated, "The Commission is committed to encouraging a diverse judiciary and welcomes all qualified attorneys to apply." The public hearing regarding this vacancy is scheduled for Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. local time in the City-County Building in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Applications must be received by the Administrative Office of the Courts by Wednesday, May 14, at 12:00 p.m. CDT. Interested attorneys can find the application and instructions online at the Tennessee Courts' website. A complete submission requires the original signed application and a digital copy.

The Commission is urging applicants to send their submissions early and to coordinate with the Administrative Office of the Courts for delivery arrangements to ensure timely receipt.
