The California Supreme Court has appointed Erin Rosenberg as the new director of its Civil Central Staff, effective May 5. She will succeed Lisa Walker, who has been in the role since 2018 and is retiring after nearly three decades with the court.
Rosenberg's tenure at the California Supreme Court spans a decade, beginning as a research attorney on the Civil Central Staff and later serving as a chambers attorney for Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero and former Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye.
Chief Justice Guerrero stated, “Erin brings a decade of dedicated service to the California Supreme Court to this new role. The justices look forward to Erin’s leadership supporting the court’s work on civil cases.”
Rosenberg graduated from UCLA and UC Davis School of Law and joined the California Bar in 2009. She was instrumental in launching a listserve that connects Supreme Court and appellate attorneys with pro bono volunteer opportunities aligned with judicial guidelines.
“I am thrilled to return to Civil Central Staff, a team of talented and dedicated attorneys," Rosenberg expressed. "I am honored and grateful for the opportunity to serve the court in this new role.”
The California Supreme Court operates three central staffs primarily consisting of career attorneys. The 15-member Civil Central Staff aids justices with civil petitions for review, writs of mandate petitions, depublication and publication requests, and attorney disciplinary matters.
The Criminal Central Staff handles petitions for review and habeas corpus petitions related to criminal cases except those involving capital punishment. The Capital Central Staff supports justices in death penalty case adjudications.
