A federal grand jury has indicted Jeffrey Caldwell, a 36-year-old resident of Vallejo, on charges of illegally possessing ammunition. Acting United States Attorney Michele Beckwith announced the indictment on Thursday.

The arrest occurred following a standoff involving the Vallejo Police Department SWAT Team. Authorities found Caldwell in possession of a privately manufactured firearm and ammunition. Due to more than ten prior felony convictions in California and Arizona, including assault, burglary, and stalking, Caldwell is prohibited from possessing ammunition.

The case results from an investigation conducted by the Vallejo Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigations. Assistant United States Attorney Charles Campbell is handling the prosecution.

If convicted, Caldwell could face up to 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. However, any sentence will be determined by the court based on statutory factors and Federal Sentencing Guidelines. It should be noted that these charges are allegations; Caldwell is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

This case falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities. The Department's strategy launched on May 26, 2021, emphasizes building community trust, supporting violence prevention organizations, focusing enforcement efforts strategically, and measuring outcomes.
