An Arizona man, Olan Jumbo, has been sentenced to 75 months in prison for involuntary manslaughter and assault resulting in serious bodily injury. The charges are linked to a fatal drunk driving incident on the Navajo Nation that occurred in November 2022.
The U.S. Attorney's Office stated there is no parole in the federal system. According to court documents, on November 25, 2022, Jane Doe and John Doe were traveling from Colorado to Tse Bonito, NM when their sedan broke down. Jane Doe’s family came to assist, and her nephew began towing the sedan with his SUV.
While they traveled on Navajo Route 12, Jumbo, who had been drinking while driving, crashed his truck into the back of the sedan at high speed. The collision resulted in Jane Doe's death and serious injuries to John Doe. Jumbo fled but was captured two days later.
Investigations revealed that Jumbo was driving between 74-82 mph in a 45-mph zone during the crash and had multiple prior convictions related to drunk driving. Open alcohol containers were found in his vehicle after the incident.
Upon release from prison, Jumbo will undergo three years of supervised release.
Acting U.S. Attorney Holland S. Kastrin and Raul Bujanda, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office, announced the sentencing. The case was investigated by the Gallup Resident Agency of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office with help from the Navajo Police Department and Department of Criminal Investigations. Assistant U.S. Attorney Meg Tomlinson is prosecuting this case.
