In Billings, U.S. Attorney Kurt Alme has recognized the contributions and sacrifices of law enforcement officers in honor of National Police Week. The week is observed from May 11 to May 17, celebrating federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement personnel.

"This week, we recognize the men and women in law enforcement who risk their lives every day to protect us, often while the rest of us are sleeping," said U.S. Attorney Alme. "Too many have sacrificed their lives to make our communities safer. We honor their bravery and reaffirm our support for every law enforcement officer in Montana and across the United States. On behalf of all of us in the United States Attorney’s Office, I extend my heartfelt appreciation to them and their families."

National Police Week was first proclaimed by President Kennedy in 1962 to honor law enforcement officers' service and sacrifices. Peace Officers Memorial Day falls on May 15 each year, specifically recognizing those killed or disabled in the line of duty.

The names of fallen officers added this year to the wall at the National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial will be read during the 37th Annual Candlelight Vigil on May 12 in Washington, D.C., at 8:00 p.m. ET. The vigil can be viewed live online via the NLEOMF YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/live/5ALpizgnNz8. Additional events for National Police Week are listed on NLEOMF's website at https://nleomf.org/.
