Matthew A. Headley and Michael L. Long, both residents of Norfolk, have submitted their applications for the position of District Court Judge in Nebraska's Seventh Judicial District. This district encompasses Antelope, Cuming, Knox, Madison, Pierce, Stanton, and Wayne counties. The vacancy arose following the retirement of Judge Mark A. Johnson.

The Judicial Nominating Commission will conduct a public hearing at the Madison County Courthouse on March 14, 2025. The session will start at 10:00 a.m. CST in Courtroom #1 located at 1313 N Main Street in Madison. During this hearing, all applicants for the judicial post will be interviewed by the commission.

Public members are encouraged to share their opinions about any candidate vying for the judicial role. They can submit additional written information or letters of recommendation before the commission selects qualified candidates to fill the vacancy. These submissions should be sent to the commission chair or emailed to ashley.jenkins@nejudicial.gov and will remain confidential.

Details about members of the Judicial Nominating Commission are available on the Nebraska Judicial Branch website.

The State of Nebraska's Constitution distributes judicial power among various courts including the Supreme Court and district courts. All state courts operate under administrative direction from the Supreme Court, alongside separate juvenile courts in specific counties and a statewide Workers’ Compensation Court.
