A Mexican national is facing federal charges after allegedly possessing a stolen firearm during a traffic stop in Sandoval County, New Mexico. The incident occurred on January 9, 2025, when law enforcement stopped a vehicle on Interstate 25. Jose Adan Gonzalez-Torres, who was a passenger in the car, admitted to having a firearm inside the vehicle. A search of the car revealed a firearm in the center console that had been reported stolen.

Further investigation by authorities led to Gonzalez admitting that he is unlawfully present in the United States. He remains in custody pending trial, which has not yet been scheduled. If convicted, Gonzalez could face up to 15 years in prison.

The announcement of these charges was made by U.S. Attorney Alexander M.M. Uballez and Jason T. Stevens, Acting Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) El Paso.

The case is being investigated by Homeland Security Investigations with assistance from the Bureau of Indian Affairs and Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Jack Burkhead is handling the prosecution.
