A Charles City man has been sentenced to over seven years in federal prison for possessing methamphetamine with the intent to distribute. Jeremy Thomas Scott, 46, received his sentence following a guilty plea on October 17, 2024, to one count of possession with intent to distribute 500 grams of methamphetamine.
During his guilty plea, Scott acknowledged being a passenger in a van stopped by law enforcement on I-35 in Cerro Gordo County on June 6, 2024. Authorities had been tipped off that Scott was traveling from California to Iowa with multiple pounds of methamphetamine.
A K-9 unit conducted a search around the van and indicated the presence of drugs. Scott admitted to having a methamphetamine pipe in the door where he was seated and claimed ownership of everything in the van. A subsequent search by Iowa State Patrol troopers uncovered approximately four pounds of methamphetamine hidden inside a Rice Krispies box.
United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand sentenced Scott in Sioux City to 90 months' imprisonment. Following his prison term, Scott will serve a four-year supervised release period. There is no parole available in the federal system.
Scott remains in United States Marshal’s custody until he is transferred to a federal prison.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kevin Fletcher and investigated by the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, and the Iowa State Patrol.
