The District Court of Maryland has announced the establishment of a new problem-solving court aimed at providing mental health treatment and related services to the Anne Arundel County community. The inaugural session is scheduled for Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at the Anne Arundel County District Court in Glen Burnie. This marks the introduction of the first Mental Health Court in Anne Arundel County.

The Mental Health Court's primary objectives are to decrease recidivism and ensure accountability by offering mental health treatment and resources to individuals with behavioral health needs. It will also include a diversion component for less serious cases.

The court will collaborate with the Anne Arundel County Crisis Response System to assess, monitor, and provide necessary treatment and resources to participants. This system is recognized as an effective program serving residents facing crises due to mental or behavioral health conditions.

The opening docket and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Anne Arundel County District Court Mental Health Court will take place on December 4, 2024, at 1:30 p.m., with media photo opportunities available from 12:30 p.m. Cameras will not be permitted once proceedings begin.

Notable attendees include Supreme Court of Maryland Chief Justice Matthew J. Fader, District Court of Maryland Chief Judge John P. Morrissey, Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman, Administrative Judge Shaem C.P. Spencer, and presiding Judge Jennifer M. Alexander.
