The New York Attorney General's Office of Special Investigation (OSI) has launched an investigation into the death of a civilian in Brooklyn. The incident occurred on November 20, 2024, involving an encounter with a member of the New York City Police Department (NYPD).
According to reports, an unmarked NYPD vehicle was traveling on Pennsylvania Avenue near Riverdale Avenue when it struck a civilian who was allegedly lying in the street. The individual was taken to a local hospital and later pronounced dead.
Under New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI reviews incidents where police or peace officers may have caused a person's death through action or inaction. This includes officers who are either on-duty or off-duty, and situations where the deceased might be armed or unarmed, and whether they were in custody or not. If OSI determines that an officer's actions may have led to the death, a comprehensive investigation is initiated.
The details currently available are preliminary and could change as the investigation progresses.
