Howard County District Administrative Judge Pamila J. Brown recently welcomed a group of Daisy Girl Scouts to the Howard County District Court, offering them an educational experience about the judicial system. The visit took place on April 4 and involved approximately 10 first-graders from Ellicott City-based Daisy Troop 987, along with their families.

Judge Brown utilized coloring books to explain the legal system to the young visitors, answered their questions, and shared insights into her role as a judge. "Judge Brown’s career was very inspiring for the girls and drove home the point that they can do anything they set their minds to," said Carrie Davila, a parent accompanying the troop. She added that Judge Brown communicated in a way that helped the children understand how courts operate.

The event also included a mock trial based on Goldilocks and the Three Bears, where each Daisy played different roles such as judge, defense, prosecution, and witness. "My hope was to spark the young ladies’ interest in the legal field," Judge Brown stated. She expressed satisfaction that some participants showed interest in pursuing a career as judges by the end of their visit.

Davila noted that using a fairy tale was an effective method for helping children grasp courtroom proceedings: "During the mock trial, you could see them wrestling with doing the right thing and being fair since one of their friends was on trial."

Judge Brown remarked on how engaged and enthusiastic the Daisies were during this activity: "It was heartwarming to see how excited the young ladies were as they participated in the mock trial of Goldilocks and the Three Bears."

The visit concluded with a tour of both Judge Brown's chambers and the clerk's office. For participating in this educational outing at Howard County District Court, each Daisy earned “Honest and Fair” petals symbolizing values upheld by Girls Scout Promise and Law.
