The Maine Supreme Judicial Court is seeking public input on proposed changes to Rule 37 of the Maine Rules of Electronic Court Systems. The amendments aim to permit certain electronic signatures and oaths by parties and their attorneys. They also address electronic oaths and signatures on charging instruments in criminal cases and seek to clarify the language regarding electronic signatures on, and the authenticity of, documents submitted electronically to the court.

Those interested can access the proposed amendments online. Comments are to be submitted to the Executive Clerk of the Supreme Judicial Court by Thursday, May 1, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. Responses can be mailed or emailed to lawcourt.clerk@courts.maine.gov. Email attachments must be in a native (text-based, not scanned) PDF format. The status of email submissions will be confirmed by a reply email from the Clerk's Office.

All submissions should include (1) the name and mailing address of the individual providing the comments and (2) the organization’s name, mailing address, and primary telephone number if applicable. People do not need to be attorneys to submit comments either individually or on behalf of an organization.

Submitted comments will be public records and may be published on the Courts website.

Matthew Pollack, the Executive Clerk, provided the information on behalf of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. The contact information for the Clerk is 205 Newbury Street, Room 139, Portland, Maine 04101, with a phone number (207) 822-4146.
