Students from several high schools in Anne Arundel County are participating in the Schools in the Court program today. The event is hosted by the Anne Arundel County District Court, where Judge Shaem C.P. Spencer has opened the courtroom to these students for an educational experience about the legal system and its consequences.
"Our goal is to teach the students how bad choices may lead to life-changing consequences," said Judge Spencer. "The students will sit in on court cases with defendants not much older than they are and see first-hand the results of poor decisions."
During this three-hour program, students will observe court proceedings and engage in discussions with Judge Spencer and attorneys from both the state's attorney's office and public defender’s office. They will also hear personal stories from individuals affected by negative behaviors such as drug abuse, drunk driving, speeding, and texting while driving. Additionally, members of the Maryland State Police K-9 squad will meet with the students.
This initiative is part of a series of four Schools in the Court programs organized by the District Court of Maryland in Anne Arundel County for this academic year. The last session is scheduled for April 5.
