Maryland's top high school mock trial teams are set to compete in the 2017 Mock Trial State Championship. The event will take place on Friday, April 28, at the Maryland Court of Appeals in Annapolis. Judge Michele D. Hotten from the Court of Appeals will preside over the proceedings.

The championship will feature the winners of semifinal matches held on Thursday, April 27, at the Circuit Court for Anne Arundel County. Judges Timothy E. Meredith and Douglas R.M. Nazarian from the Court of Special Appeals will oversee these semifinals. Competing schools include Baltimore City College High School, Bishop Walsh High School, The Park School, and Winston Churchill High School.

The competition relies on numerous judges, magistrates, and attorneys who volunteer as coaches and scorekeepers at various levels of the contest. Since its inception in 1983, more than 54,000 students across Maryland have participated in this educational initiative.

Sponsored by the Citizenship Law-Related Education Program (CLREP), along with the Maryland State Bar Association and Maryland Judiciary, these mock trials offer students a chance to engage with legal processes while honing their advocacy skills.

Media representatives are invited to attend Friday's event or watch it live via webcast starting at 10 a.m. Details can be found on the Judiciary’s website.
