Students across Maryland will be recognized for their contributions to promoting peace through art. On December 13, 2016, Chief Judge Mary Ellen Barbera of the Maryland Court of Appeals will host a reception in Annapolis to honor winners of the Judiciary’s Conflict Resolution Day Student Bookmark Art Contest. This annual event encourages students to use their artistic skills to advocate for peaceful conflict resolution.
The reception will commence at 4 p.m., where Chief Judge Barbera will present awards and engage with the young artists, along with their families and friends. Over 1,000 bookmarks created by students will be showcased during the event and later displayed at the Judicial College Education and Conference Center throughout December. Some entries are set to feature in Judiciary publications.
Now in its eleventh year, the contest attracted more than 2,100 submissions from children ranging from kindergarten to eighth grade. The contest divides participants into three age categories: kindergarten through second grade; third through fifth grade; and sixth through eighth grade. Prizes include $75 for first place, $50 for second place, and $25 for third place within each group.
The event is sponsored by the Maryland Judiciary’s Mediation and Conflict Resolution Office (MACRO). Media representatives are invited to cover the event by contacting the Office of Communications and Public Affairs at 410-260-1488. They must secure necessary releases from families for publishing photos or videos of student artwork.
