Maryland judges, attorneys, and justice officials will engage with students in Carroll County to enhance their understanding of law and society through the Civics and Law Academy. This event is scheduled for Tuesday, December 1, 2015, at North Carroll High School in Hampstead. It aims to provide a platform for students from Carroll County Career and Technology Center, Manchester Valley High School, and North Carroll High School to discuss various legal topics such as juvenile rights, criminal law, free speech, and technology-related laws.
Chief Judge Mary Ellen Barbera of the Maryland Court of Appeals will serve as the plenary speaker. She emphasized the importance of educating young people about justice systems: “Today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders. It is essential that they have an understanding of our system of justice, our rights, and our laws,” said Chief Judge Barbera. The session is expected to draw around 100 students from participating schools.
Judge Pamila J. Brown from Howard County's District Court expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming discussions: “We are looking forward to a lively discussion. We tie in issues that students deal with every day so they ask great questions and raise interesting ideas,” she stated.
The event is organized by several partners including the Maryland Judiciary, Maryland State Bar Association, Citizenship and Law-Related Education Program (CLREP), American Bar Association along with local support from Carroll County Public Schools and Carroll County Bar Association.
This initiative aims to provide high school students a comprehensive understanding of legal frameworks and civic responsibilities within a democratic society.
