The South Dakota Supreme Court will hold its October 2024 term at the University of South Dakota Knudson School of Law in Vermillion. Chief Justice Steven R. Jensen has invited the public to attend the sessions, which are scheduled for October 1 and 2.

During these sessions, oral arguments will be presented for four cases on Tuesday and three cases on Wednesday. Proceedings will begin at 9 a.m. CDT and conclude by noon each day at the USD Knudson School of Law located at 414 E. Clark St., Vermillion.

A booklet detailing the schedule, case synopses, justice biographies, and appellate procedures is available online for those interested in learning more about the proceedings.

The South Dakota Supreme Court conducts these traveling sessions twice annually to engage with citizens across the state, offering them an opportunity to observe court operations firsthand. Local high school government classes have also been invited to participate.

Chief Justice Jensen emphasized the significance of these events: “Holding a traveling term of court at locations like the University of South Dakota allows us to bring the judicial process closer to the people we serve,” he stated. He noted that it provides students, educators, and community members with a unique chance to witness how decisions impacting South Dakotans are made.

In addition to oral arguments, several non-oral cases are also on this term's docket for consideration by the court.
