Retired General Sessions Criminal Court Judge Joyce C. Broffitt passes away at age 68

Retired Shelby County General Sessions Criminal Court Judge Joyce Cassandra Broffitt passed away on August 23, 2024. She was 68 years old.

Judge Broffitt was appointed to the General Sessions Criminal Court, Division 9, by the Shelby County Commission on November 18, 1996, and took office on November 22, 1996. She replaced Judge William Ray Ingram. Judge Broffitt was re-elected in 1998 and 2006 but was defeated in her bid for re-election in August 2014. She retired when her term expired on August 31, 2014. Additionally, she served as a judge for the Tennessee Court of the Judiciary.

Before taking the bench, Judge Broffitt served as an assistant district attorney for the Shelby County District Attorney's Office from 1989 to 1996. While in law school from 1983 to 1988, she worked as a pretrial counselor with Shelby County pretrial services.

Judge Broffitt received her law degree from the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law and earned her undergraduate degree from Rhodes College.

Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, August 30 at Serenity Funeral Home in Memphis. Visitation is at 9 a.m., followed by a service at 10 a.m.
