Judicial Nominating Board seeks applicants for three new superior court judge positions

The Judicial Nominating Board is seeking applicants for three new Superior Judge positions created during the recent legislative session and enacted into law effective July 1, 2024. The Chief Superior Judge will assign one judge to the Northeastern area of the North Region of the Superior Court, with primary assignments to the Washington, Lamoille, Caledonia, Essex, and Orleans units. The successful candidates for the second and third positions will be assigned to the Northwest area of the North Region of the Superior Court, with primary assignments to the Chittenden, Franklin, Grand Isle, Lamoille, and Washington units.

A candidate for judge or justice must be a Vermont resident and an experienced lawyer who has practiced law for a minimum of ten years, with at least five years in Vermont immediately preceding the candidate’s application to the Board. The Board may make exceptions to the requirement that the candidate’s five years of practice in Vermont be contiguous and immediately preceding the candidate’s application for reasons including family, military, academic, or medical leave [§ 602(c)(1)].
