The South Dakota Unified Judicial System is seeking an independent contractor to serve as a child support referee for the Second Judicial Circuit. Applicants must be licensed attorneys in South Dakota, members in good standing of the State Bar Association, and familiar with family law and the child support referee process. The qualifications and duties are outlined in South Dakota Codified Law 25-7A-6 and 25-7A-22.
Effective July 1, 2024, the flat-fee compensation for this role is $324 per case if contract requirements are met. The child support referee will need to provide their own equipment, schedule hearings, and draft necessary documents. Space may be provided at the local courthouse if needed.
While primarily serving the Second Judicial Circuit, referees may occasionally handle cases from other circuits statewide. Candidates recommended by the State Court Administrator will be appointed by the Supreme Court. Upon approval, a contract will be established between the referee and the Unified Judicial System.
Interested individuals should submit a letter of interest and a complete resume by 5 p.m. on July 31, 2024, to Caroline A. Srstka at the State Court Administrator’s Office.
The Unified Judicial System comprises the Supreme Court, Circuit Courts, and State Court Administrator’s Office. The Supreme Court is South Dakota's highest court and final decision-maker on state law matters. The Circuit Courts handle criminal proceedings and civil litigation at trial level. The State Court Administrator’s Office provides centralized administrative assistance for the judiciary.
