The Vermont Supreme Court is set to conduct its annual "On the Road" session at Vermont Law and Graduate School on March 19, 2025. The event will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. in Oakes Hall on the VLGS campus.
Chief Justice Paul Reiber expressed enthusiasm about returning to VLGS, stating, "We are excited to go to VLGS again this year." He highlighted the importance of holding oral arguments on campus as it allows students and the public to observe the judicial process closely. "An appeal is an important part of the judicial process and demonstrates how legal disagreements are resolved through dialogue with the lawyers in the cases," Reiber added.
During this session, the Court will hear oral arguments in three cases addressing various legal issues:
- Whether sufficient evidence was presented by the State to convict a defendant of involuntary manslaughter and cruelty to a child with death resulting, and if these verdicts are mutually exclusive.
- Whether state law prohibits all municipal regulation of agriculture or cannabis cultivation.
- Whether plaintiffs can recover emotional distress damages against an employer who negligently failed to prevent its employee from secretly filming plaintiffs while they were changing clothes, and if the employer is jointly and severally liable for the intentional acts of its employee.
The court calendar is available for viewing online, and proceedings will be livestreamed on Vermont Law and Graduate School's YouTube channel.
