The Tennessee Supreme Court is set to hear oral arguments on May 22, 2024, in front of a group of accomplished high school seniors at the Tennessee American Legion Boys State at Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville. This event is part of the Court’s SCALES program, an initiative launched by the Tennessee Supreme Court in 1995 with the aim of educating high school students about the state's legal system and the functions of the judicial branch.

Chief Justice Holly Kirby emphasized the importance of this initiative stating, “It is essential for our young people to see the judicial system in action and up close.” She expressed her excitement about bringing this special session to Tennessee Tech University where students will have the opportunity to experience both a civil and criminal case before the Tennessee Supreme Court.

The court session forms part of a weeklong Boys State program designed to provide rising high school seniors with an immersive experience in state government operations. Besides learning about the judicial process and studying cases presented at oral argument, Boys State participants also interact with other elected officials in Tennessee. They participate in mock elections, legislative sessions, presentations, assemblies, and recreational programs.

Boys State participants will observe oral arguments in two cases starting at 9:00 a.m. CST on May 22, 2024. The proceedings will be livestreamed on TNCourts YouTube page.

The first case involves Heather Smith v. BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee. The second case is State v. William Rimmel, III. Additionally, a third case - Daryl A. Gray v. Board of Professional Responsibility of the Supreme Court of Tennessee - will be submitted to the Court on briefs.

Media members planning to attend oral arguments are advised to review Supreme Court Rule 30 and file any required requests to Samantha Fisher, Communications Director: Samantha.fisher@tncourts.gov
