ORLANDO, Fla. (Legal Newsline) - A Florida woman is suing IKEA, claiming it sold an appliance that exploded and shot hot coffee all over her.

Dina Calderon filed her lawsuit Feb. 4 in Orange County Circuit Court, alleging negligence and a breach of implied warranty of merchantability. She is represented by Steven Nauman of Morgan & Morgan.

The coffee maker was defective in its design, manufacture and/or warning, rendering it "unreasonably dangerous" for users, the suit says. It says Calderon bought the IKEA-brand coffee maker in 2019 in Orlando.

She was brewing on April 25, 2020, when the maker indicated it was done. She neared it to pour a cup of coffee.

"However, as Plaintiff approached the subject coffee maker, (it) suddenly exploded apart and sprayed Plaintiff with its scaling [sic] hot contents," the suit says.
