Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP announced that Evan R. Thorn has joined the firm’s Corporate and Financial Regulatory team as of counsel in Raleigh. He joins the firm from Reed Smith in Washington, DC.
Thorn counsels clients on federal and state laws and regulations affecting banks, non-bank lenders, FinTech companies, and other financial institutions. Thorn has advised clients on a wide variety of financial regulatory issues, including consumer financing and credit, the Dodd-Frank Act and Volcker Rule, anti-money laundering laws and policies, electronic and mobile payment systems, money transmission, virtual currencies and blockchain technology, bank-owned life insurance, brokered deposits, fair lending, the Fair Credit Reporting Act, unfair and deceptive acts or practices (UDAP) statutes, data privacy, and federal and state licensing and registration requirements. In addition, Thorn represents banks and other financial institution clients in transactional matters.
Thorn also has white collar investigations and litigation experience, having represented clients in both internal and government investigations before agencies such as the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Securities and Exchange Commission, Department of Justice, and Federal Trade Commission. The investigations have involved subject matters including consumer protection laws, accounting and securities regulations, healthcare and insurance laws, and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. Evan’s litigation experience includes securities, healthcare, False Claims Act, trade secret, antitrust, and general commercial litigation matters.
Thorn earned his JD from the Columbia University School of Law and a BA in Economics and Government, summa cum laude, from Georgetown University. He is admitted in the District of Columbia and New York; his North Carolina admission is pending.
