United States District Judge Thomas O. Rice has sentenced Trevor J. Lunney, a 39-year-old resident of Lewiston, Idaho, to five years in prison for making threats against his lawyer, prosecutor, and the public. Following his conviction on December 10, 2024, Lunney will also face three years of supervised release.
Court documents reveal that in July 2022, while under community custody in Washington State for previous threats to kill, Lunney sent threatening messages to his Department of Corrections officer. He stated that "mass violence becomes inevitable" and discussed plans for a school shooting at an Asotin County School District School and a mass shooting at the Asotin County Fair parade. Upon contact by DOC officers on July 18, 2022, Lunney continued to threaten mass shootings and spoke about live streaming an attack at the Asotin County Fair Parade. He claimed access to firearms during this period.
Later that day, Lunney was arrested by the Clarkston Police Department and held at the Asotin County Jail on felony charges related to these threats. While incarcerated, he communicated with family members through monitored calls and emails expressing anger towards the criminal justice system and plotting further violence using an AR-15.
On December 5th, 2022, while awaiting trial for his July threats, Lunney's hostility culminated in an email from jail where he expressed desires for murder-suicide involving his lawyer and prosecutors upon release.
Acting United States Attorney Rich Barker thanked victims and witnesses who testified against Lunney: “Lunney not only threatened mass violence but also targeted those ensuring justice—his attorney and prosecuting attorneys.” Barker commended the FBI's intervention before any violent acts could occur.
Special Agent in Charge Mehtab Syed of the Salt Lake City FBI remarked on the nature of Lunney’s threats: “They instilled fear not only in targeted victims but an entire community.” The case was investigated by the FBI and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Tyler H.L. Tornabene and Dan Fruchter.
