Bryant Dewayne Underwood, a 36-year-old resident of Spiro, Oklahoma, has been sentenced to 46 months in prison for possessing an unregistered firearm. The United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma made the announcement.

The charge against Underwood resulted from an investigation conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives along with the LeFlore County Sheriff’s Office. Underwood pleaded guilty on January 13, 2025. According to investigators, he was found with a 5.56 NATO (.223) caliber short-barreled rifle during a traffic stop in LeFlore County on October 26, 2023. The rifle had been reported stolen from Arkansas and was not registered to Underwood in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities. The program emphasizes fostering trust within communities, supporting organizations that prevent violence, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes.

Chief U.S. District Judge Ronald A. White presided over the hearing at the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma. Underwood will remain in custody under the U.S. Marshals Service until he is transported to a designated Bureau of Prisons facility to serve his non-paroleable sentence.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jarrod Leaman and Edith A. Singer represented the prosecution.
