Murray County man pleads guilty to assault and eluding police

Jayson Geoffrey Evans, a resident of Sulphur, Oklahoma, has pleaded guilty to charges stemming from incidents that occurred on December 30, 2023. The United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma confirmed that Evans admitted guilt to one count of assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to do bodily harm in Indian Country and one count of eluding a peace officer in Indian Country.

The assault charge carries a potential penalty of up to 10 years imprisonment and a fine reaching $250,000. The charge of eluding a peace officer could result in imprisonment ranging from one to five years and fines between $1,000 and $5,000.

According to the indictment, Evans attacked the victim using a dangerous weapon with the intention of causing bodily harm. Additionally, it was alleged that he attempted to evade law enforcement while driving after being signaled visually and audibly to stop. These events took place within Murray County on the Chickasaw Nation Reservation.

The investigation into these offenses was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation along with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. U.S. Magistrate Judge Jason A. Robertson accepted Evans' plea in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma and has mandated a presentence investigation report.

Evans is currently held by the United States Marshals Service as he awaits sentencing. His sentence will be determined by a U.S. District Court Judge who will consider various factors including the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines.
