Last week, David Miller, a 55-year-old resident of Coldwater, was sentenced to 18 to 50 years in prison for sexually assaulting two minors. The sentencing took place on May 2 and was delivered by Judge Paul E. Stutesman of the 45th Circuit Court in St. Joseph County. This announcement came from Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel.
Miller had previously pleaded guilty to two counts of First-Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct in February. His sentencing follows a related conviction and sentencing in Branch County, which was handled by the local prosecutor.
The assaults occurred multiple times across Branch and St. Joseph counties. The initial investigation into Miller's actions began with the Lagrange County Sheriff’s Department in Indiana in March 2023. Information gathered during this investigation suggested that some assaults may have taken place in Michigan, prompting a separate inquiry by the Michigan State Police. This led to charges and convictions in both St. Joseph and Branch counties.
Attorney General Nessel expressed her appreciation for the collaborative efforts involved: “I am grateful for the collaborative efforts of the prosecutors in my office, the Branch County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, the Lagrange County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, the Lagrange County Sheriff’s Department, and the Michigan State Police, who all worked together to ensure justice for the victims in this case.” She added that their dedication resulted in "significant prison time while sparing the victims from the trauma of a trial."
Earlier this year, Miller received another sentence of up to 15 years' incarceration after pleading guilty to two counts of Third-Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct and other charges brought by the Branch County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. All these charges were related to his actions against two minor male victims.
His sentences will run concurrently.
