Richard Burke Baer, a long-time resident of Bismarck, North Dakota, passed away on May 4, 2025, at the age of 80. A celebration of his life is scheduled for May 22, 2025, at the Broken Oar in Mandan. The event will commence at 2:00 p.m., and all individuals over the age of 21 are welcome to attend.
Born on January 19, 1945, in Langdon, North Dakota, Richard was the son of Robert and Margaret (Burke) Baer. He spent his early years in Langdon and graduated from St. Alphonsus High School before pursuing a law degree from the University of North Dakota School of Law. On July 22, 1969, he was admitted to the North Dakota State Bar. His legal career began in the State’s Attorney’s office before he transitioned into private practice in Bismarck where he worked for 46 years.
In addition to his legal career, Richard became the owner of the Broken Oar Bar in 1991. He enjoyed interacting with patrons as well as spending time with family and friends there. Known for his quick wit and humor, Richard had a particular fondness for Christmas and St. Patrick’s Day—considering it his second birthday due to his Irish heritage—and often sent countdown reminders leading up to Christmas.
In the year 2000, Richard met Edie Waslaski who would become his wife. Their shared love for travel took them across various parts of the world including memorable trips to Ireland with family members.
Richard is survived by his wife Edie; children Kristin Kartch (Frank) and Ryan Baer (Lynne); grandchildren Isabella and Samuel Kartch along with Essa and Zia Baer; brothers John Baer (Sharon), Mike Baer, Stephen Baer (Joanne); sister-in-law Ann Baer; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by parents Robert and Margaret Baer; brothers Robert Jr., Mark; sisters Maureen Harmon, Kathleen Angulo Baer, and Margaret Galler.
