An 18-year-old resident of Edinburg, Texas, has been charged with possessing a firearm on school property. The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei.

Kinzey Lira is set to appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge Nadia S. Medrano at 10 a.m.

According to the criminal complaint filed on May 6, authorities discovered that Lira allegedly had a Glock 9mm pistol and a loaded magazine in his backpack while on school grounds.

If found guilty, Lira could face up to five years in federal prison and a maximum fine of $250,000.

The investigation was carried out by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives with help from the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Guerra will be prosecuting the case.

It is important to note that a criminal complaint is an accusation and not evidence of guilt. A defendant remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty through due process.
