A Trenton man has been sentenced to 84 months in prison for possessing ammunition as a felon, linked to a shooting incident. U.S. Attorney Alina Habba announced the sentencing of Rashon Lawery, 27, who had previously pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Georgette Castner in Trenton federal court. Lawery was charged with unlawful possession of twenty-six rounds of 9-millimeter ammunition.

The case documents and court statements reveal that on May 23, 2022, the Trenton Police Department responded to a shooting report where three individuals sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Six shell casings were recovered at the scene. During a subsequent foot pursuit through a park in Trenton, Lawery discarded an unserialized semiautomatic pistol loaded with twenty rounds of ammunition. A ballistics laboratory later confirmed that the shell casings matched Lawery’s gun.

In addition to his prison sentence, Lawery will serve three years of supervised release.

U.S. Attorney Alina Habba credited several agencies for their work on this case: special agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Newark Field Division, officers from the Trenton Police Department under Police Director Steve E. Wilson, and personnel from the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office led by Prosecutor Janetta D. Marbrey.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Tracey Agnew represented the government in this case.

Defense counsel was Andrea G. Aldana, Esq., based in Trenton.
