Kevin Hopkins, a 39-year-old resident of the District of Columbia, now faces a federal firearm charge according to an announcement made today. The indictment in U.S. District Court is part of the "Make D.C. Safe Again" initiative. U.S. Attorney Edward R. Martin Jr., Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA) Special Agent in Charge Ibrar A. Mian, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Special Agent in Charge Anthony Spotswood, and Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Chief Pamela Smith made the announcement.

The "Make D.C. Safe Again" initiative, led by U.S. Attorney Martin, aims to reduce violent crime in the District of Columbia by directing resources towards addressing gun violence, federal firearm violations and seeking stronger penalties for offenders.

Hopkins is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon. Court documents reveal that in November 2024, a search warrant was carried out by the MPD's Violent Crime Suppression Division – Robbery Suppression Unit and the DEA Task Force in the 4300 block of 3rd Street, SE. During the search, authorities found a 9mm handgun with ammunition in the chamber and 14 rounds in the magazine, hidden between sofa cushions. No firearms were registered at the location. At the time, Hopkins was under supervised release following a conviction for assault, burglary, and stalking from a 2016 case. He was initially charged in D.C. Superior Court.

The investigation involves the DEA Washington Division, ATF Washington Field Division, and the Metropolitan Police Department.

It is emphasized that an indictment is merely an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
