The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia participated in a hearing before the Council of the District of Columbia to discuss proposed legislation. The focus was on three bills: the "Pretrial Detention Amendment Act of 2025," the "Kidnapping Amendment Act of 2025," and the "Case Closure and Witness Support Amendment Act of 2025."
The U.S. Attorney’s Office expressed strong support for the "Pretrial Detention Amendment Act of 2025," stating that it will make permanent existing changes to adult pretrial detention as outlined in the "Secure DC Omnibus Amendment Act of 2024." They also endorsed the "Kidnapping Amendment Act of 2025," which proposes important amendments to the district's kidnapping laws following recent case law interpretations.
However, concerns were raised regarding the "Case Closure and Witness Support Amendment Act of 2025." The office noted that some provisions might inadvertently have negative impacts, recommending that the Council reassess these sections.
Elana Suttenberg, Special Counsel to the U.S. Attorney, also attended the session and provided written remarks, which can be accessed by the public.
