Brandon Montanari, Rohail Kahn, and Michael Williams have each pled guilty to charges related to the deprivation of an inmate's rights at the Mid-State Correctional Facility in a courtroom event announced by United States Attorney John A. Sarcone III, with Craig L. Tremaroli, Special Agent in Charge of the Albany FBI Field Office.
The three former prison guards admitted to assaulting an inmate in April 2023, incorporating acts of punching and kicking without provocation, which resulted in bodily harm. They also conceded that they collaborated to provide false statements during an internal investigation of the incident.
Scheduled sentencing for the defendants will occur in late July and August. Each faces a possible maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, followed by up to three years of supervised release, and a potential fine of up to $250,000.
The FBI leads the investigation with the assistance of the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision Office of Special Investigations. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael F. Perry and Michael D. Gadarian are overseeing the prosecution.
