Eric Harris, a 38-year-old resident of Wilmington, North Carolina, received a 10-year prison sentence for his involvement in drug trafficking and firearm possession. The sentence was handed down in New Bern after Harris pled guilty earlier this year on January 16.

Court records show that Harris was involved in the distribution of methamphetamine and fentanyl. He was found guilty of possession with intent to distribute over 50 grams of methamphetamine and possessing a firearm to further drug trafficking activities. Reports indicate Harris acquired methamphetamine in Charlotte with plans to distribute it in Wilmington.

From August 20 to September 9, 2024, the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office conducted controlled purchases from Harris, acquiring over 3 ounces of methamphetamine and 10 grams of fentanyl at the Campus Edge Apartments in Wilmington. Following their final purchase on September 9, law enforcement arrested Harris and searched his apartment, finding an additional two ounces of methamphetamine, nineteen grams of fentanyl, and a loaded firearm.

The investigation was part of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) initiative, designed to address high-level drug trafficking operations through a cooperative law enforcement approach.

Daniel P. Bubar, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, made the announcement following the sentencing by U.S. District Judge Louise W. Flanagan. The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives along with the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy Severo prosecuted the case.
