A Mexican national residing illegally in Laredo, Texas, has been sentenced to 24 months in federal prison for assaulting a Border Patrol agent. U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei made the announcement following the sentencing of Guillermo Osto-Navarrete, who pleaded guilty to the charges earlier this year.

U.S. District Judge Diana Saldaña presided over the case and ordered the imprisonment. She commented on the risk posed during a high-speed chase involving Osto-Navarrete, stating it was a "miracle" no serious injuries occurred, emphasizing his need for deterrence and questioning his presence in the United States. Osto-Navarrete is expected to face removal after serving his sentence.

Ganjei highlighted the risks law enforcement officers take in their duties, affirming that violence against officers triggers "the strongest possible response from the Southern District of Texas." He also underscored the danger Osto-Navarrete posed to the community during his evasion attempt.

The incident on October 14, 2024, began when Osto-Navarrete picked up several illegal aliens near the Rio Grande River. Attempts by law enforcement to stop his vehicle led to a high-speed pursuit through a residential area, during which Osto-Navarrete collided with a Texas Department of Public Safety unit, causing injury to its officer.

Upon apprehension, Osto-Navarrete assaulted the assisting Border Patrol agent, causing multiple injuries. He later escaped from a hospital, only to be recaptured shortly after. Osto-Navarrete admitted to receiving $50 for transporting illegal aliens.

The FBI conducted the investigation with help from the Border Patrol, DPS, and Laredo Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Homero Ramirez led the prosecution. This case is part of Operation Take Back America, an initiative by the Department of Justice aimed at combating illegal immigration and related criminal activities.
