California Attorney General Rob Bonta has joined a coalition of 51 attorneys general in sending warning letters to nine companies transmitting substantial volumes of robocall traffic. These robocalls include scams related to government and financial imposters, credit card interest rate reductions, Medicare scams, political impersonations, cable discount scams, and utility disconnect scams.
"I don't have to tell Californians that robocalls are annoying and disruptive — but it is important to also remember that many times these calls are illegal and are used to scam unsuspecting people out of their hard-earned money," said Attorney General Bonta. "Today, my fellow attorneys general and I sent warning letters to companies responsible for facilitating robocalls concerning Medicare, cable discount, and utility scams, among other calls. I am proud to join in this national, bipartisan effort to protect consumers from unwanted robocalls and the risk of financial harm."
The letters, sent by the Anti-Robocall Multistate Litigation Task Force, warn the companies to cease unlawful call traffic immediately, warning that ongoing violations could lead to legal actions. Findings from the investigations have been shared with the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) Enforcement Bureau.
The companies receiving warning letters include All Access Telecom, Lingo Telecom, NGL Communications, Range, RSCom Ltd, Telcast Network, Telcentris (Voxox), ThinQ Technologies (Commio), and Global Net Holdings.
The Task Force, comprising 51 bipartisan attorneys general, is responsible for investigating and taking legal actions against entities routing significant volumes of illegal robocall traffic in the U.S.
Attorney General Bonta emphasizes his commitment to enforcing consumer protections in California and nationwide. In March, he supported a FCC rule aiming to close loopholes exploited by lead generators to bypass consent requirements for robocalls.
In 2024, Bonta took multiple actions against companies transmitting illegal robocall traffic, including warning letters to four telecom operators for harboring suspected illegal robocalls, as well as filing critiques of FCC rules to curb robocall activities.
Previously in May 2023, Attorney General Bonta, along with a coalition, announced a lawsuit against Avid Telecom for allegedly facilitating billions of unlawful robocalls.
