A Mississippi resident has admitted to impersonating a deputy U.S. Marshal, as disclosed by Acting United States Attorney Michael M. Simpson. William Gilchrist of Greenville entered a guilty plea on March 25, 2025. The charges arise from Gilchrist's actions on June 19, 2024, when he pretended to be a Fugitive Task Force Officer with the U.S. Marshals Service to avoid arrest by a Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office Detective.

The scheduled sentencing date is June 24, 2025, and it will take place before U.S. District Judge Susie Morgan. Gilchrist could face up to three years in prison, a possible one-year period of supervised release, a fine that may reach $250,000, and a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.

Authorities from Homeland Security Investigations and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office were commended by Acting U.S. Attorney Simpson for their efforts in the investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Paul J. Hubbell from the General Crimes Unit is leading the prosecution.
