A 22-year-old man from New Orleans, Darryl Alexander, pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to steal mail and possession of stolen mail. The announcement was made by Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson. The guilty plea was entered on March 27, 2025, and the case was presided over by United States District Judge Eldon E. Fallon, who has scheduled sentencing for June 26, 2025.
According to the indictment, the incident occurred on June 23, 2022, in Kenner, Louisiana. Alexander and an accomplice attempted to steal mail from two locations. Alexander served as the driver while his co-conspirator used a United States Postal Service (USPS) "arrow key" to access and steal mail from the first location. The second attempt to steal mail at another location was unsuccessful.
Following a police pursuit, authorities apprehended the duo, who were found in possession of 36 stolen checks, including one forged counterfeit check, six pieces of opened mail, and the arrow key used in their theft.
For each charge, Darryl Alexander could face a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison, up to three years of supervised release, a fine of up to $250,000, and a mandatory $100 special assessment fee.
Acting U.S. Attorney Simpson commended the efforts of the United States Postal Inspection Service, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, and the Kenner Police Department in their investigation. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jon Maestri of the General Crimes Unit.
