A federal grand jury in Salt Lake City, Utah, has indicted a Mexican national living in Salt Lake County on charges related to drug trafficking and firearms possession. The defendant, Luis Alberto Ramirez-Gonzalez, also known as Leonardo Gomez-Ahumada, is accused of involvement in drug and gun crimes.

Ramirez-Gonzalez, 28, who resides in Herriman, Utah, was charged on March 17, 2025. Court documents reveal that detectives from the Utah County Major Crimes Task Force began their investigation of a drug trafficking organization in December 2024. On March 13, 2025, law enforcement executed a search warrant at a residence in Magna, Utah, where they encountered the accused.

Reports indicate that approximately 300 grams of suspected heroin were seized during the search, and the substance tested positive for heroin. Additionally, Ramirez-Gonzalez allegedly possessed a Sig Sauer P320 handgun and ammunition, despite his illegal status in the United States, which prohibits him from having a firearm. He was subsequently taken into custody.

The charges against Ramirez-Gonzalez include possession of heroin with the intent to distribute and being an alien in possession of a firearm. His initial court appearance is set for March 28, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. in a federal courtroom in Salt Lake City.

Acting United States Attorney Felice John Viti for the District of Utah announced the charges. The Utah County Major Crimes Task Force is handling the investigation, and Special Assistant United States Attorney Peter Reichman is prosecuting the case for the District of Utah.

This legal action is part of Operation Take Back America, an initiative led by the Department of Justice. The operation aims to combat illegal immigration, dismantle cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and safeguard communities from violent crime. It utilizes resources from the Department's Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhoods.

According to legal standards, an indictment constitutes an allegation, and defendants remain presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
