Attorney General Ken Paxton has initiated an inquiry into Superior Insurance following accusations of employing private investigators to conduct surveillance on lawmakers, journalists, and private citizens. The objective of this surveillance was allegedly to collect confidential information about individuals with pending insurance claims against the company.
During a public hearing before the Texas House of Representatives Committee on Delivery of Government Efficiency, CEO Mark Sanders of Superior Insurance acknowledged that the company had involved private investigators. These investigators were allegedly tasked with monitoring the activities of Texas Legislature members as well as private citizens pursuing payment for medical bills. Concerns were raised by lawmakers regarding the intentions behind these actions, suggesting they were aimed at gaining leverage to secure future state contracts and to undermine customers' claims.
Attorney General Paxton has launched a formal investigation into the matter, suspecting potential illegal activities by Superior Insurance. "The allegations concerning Superior’s actions, such as actions that were characterized as potentially blackmailing lawmakers to secure state contracts and surveilling private citizens to avoid paying legitimate claims, are deeply troubling,” Paxton stated. “I will get to the bottom of this, uncover any illegal activity, and hold bad actors responsible. Justice will be served."
