Ijaz Oliver, a Charleston resident, has been sentenced to one year and six months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for the charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. This decision was announced by Acting United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston. The case was further supported by the investigative efforts of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Charleston Police Department.

Court documents reveal that on August 28, 2023, Oliver was in possession of a Smith & Wesson model 36 .38-caliber revolver. Federal statutes prohibit those with prior felony convictions from possessing firearms or ammunition. Oliver's prior conviction in United States District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia for conspiracy to distribute 5 grams or more of cocaine base, dated May 29, 2007, rendered him ineligible to possess firearms.

This case, prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jeremy B. Wolfe along with former Assistant United States Attorney Troy D. Adams, is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods. The program aims to unite law enforcement and communities to curb violent crime and enhance neighborhood safety. On May 26, 2021, the Department launched a strategy to reinforce PSN's focus on trust-building within communities, support of community-based violence prevention programs, prioritizing enforcement actions, and measuring outcomes.

The sentence was imposed by Senior United States District Judge David A. Faber. Those seeking more information can access related documents on the PACER system under Case No. 2:24-cr-136.
