Kevin Lewis, a 38-year-old from Houston, Texas, was sentenced to eight years in prison on March 19, 2025. United States District Judge David G. Campbell handed down the sentence after Lewis pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting a material false statement during the purchase of a firearm. Following his prison term, Lewis will also serve three years of supervised release.

The charges stem from activities beginning in February 2020 when Lewis, who is prohibited from possessing firearms due to his status as a convicted felon, encouraged his wife and brother-in-law to buy firearms for him over an 18-month period. He then sold these firearms primarily in California. His wife, Karra Lewis, received an 18-month prison sentence while his brother-in-law, Isaac Godfrey, was sentenced to 42 months. All three were arrested in Houston.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence by uniting law enforcement agencies with community members. The Department of Justice has reinforced PSN with strategies focusing on community trust and legitimacy, supporting organizations that prevent violence, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes.

The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in Phoenix with help from ATF Houston, Mesa Police Department Major Crimes Unit, and the Houston Police Department. The prosecution was managed by the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona in Phoenix.
