A Guatemalan citizen residing in Dubuque County, Iowa, has been sentenced to federal prison for illegally reentering the United States after being deported twice. Humberto Leonidas-Suarez, 61, received a sentence of 39 days following his guilty plea on March 4, 2025.

Leonidas-Suarez admitted to returning to the U.S. without government permission after previous deportations in 2010 and 2024. Immigration officials discovered his illegal presence on February 6, 2025, when he was found at the Dubuque County Jail due to an arrest on state charges for failure to appear.

Chief Judge C.J. Williams of the United States District Court in Cedar Rapids imposed the sentence. After completing his prison term, Leonidas-Suarez will undergo a one-year supervised release period. He is currently in the custody of the United States Marshals until he is transferred to immigration officials.
