California Attorney General Rob Bonta has expressed concern over President Trump's recent actions, which he describes as troubling attacks on the rule of law and the U.S. Constitution. In a statement released today, Bonta emphasized the importance of maintaining the balance between the three branches of government established by the founding fathers.
"More than two centuries ago, our founding fathers established three co-equal branches of government; each branch designed to act as a check on the others and curb the misuse of power by those in higher office," Bonta stated. He further noted that this principle is currently being tested.
Bonta criticized the Trump Administration for attempting to exercise authority beyond its reach, infringing upon powers that belong to Congress or states. He highlighted instances where court orders have been ignored by the administration, describing these actions as both unlawful and dangerous.
"Our constitutional democracy rests upon a legal system in which attorneys dutifully represent their clients, facts and law are presented to judges, and after careful consideration, those judges issue orders that must be followed," he said.
The Attorney General also condemned any efforts to undermine due process or discredit independent judiciary systems. "Attacks to undermine due process, discredit or intimidate our independent judiciary...are either unlawful, inconsistent with the foundational principles of our American legal system, or both."
Bonta described President Trump's demands for judicial compliance with executive branch wishes as abnormal. He also criticized threats against attorneys and law firms disliked by Trump.
"We must continue to speak up and push back when our democratic norms are violated," Bonta urged. He committed to holding President Trump accountable for upholding constitutional responsibilities: "As California Attorney General, I promise I will."
