A man from Rapid City, South Dakota, has been sentenced to two years and nine months in federal prison for failing to register as a sex offender. The sentencing was announced by United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell and took place on March 17, 2025, under U.S. District Judge Camela C. Theeler.

Trevor Red Bird, aged 36, will also serve five years of supervised release following his prison term and must pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Red Bird was indicted by a federal grand jury in November 2024 and pleaded guilty on January 8, 2025.

Red Bird's legal issues began with a conviction for Abusive Sexual Contact in May 2008 in U.S. District Court, which required him to register as a sex offender and update his registration accordingly. He has previous convictions for failing to register as a sex offender in the years 2017, 2019, and 2022.

After being released from prison in December 2023 and starting supervised release in Rapid City, Red Bird initially complied with registration requirements. However, he failed to update his registration after moving from his registered address in May 2024. This led to an arrest warrant being issued and his subsequent arrest on October 5, 2024.

The case is part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative started by the Department of Justice in May 2006 aimed at combating child sexual exploitation and abuse. This initiative brings together resources from various levels of law enforcement to prosecute offenders and rescue victims.

The investigation into Red Bird's failure to register was conducted by the U.S. Marshals Service along with the Rapid City Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson handled the prosecution.

Following sentencing, Trevor Red Bird was remanded into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service.
