Brian Alexis Patron Lopez has been found guilty by a federal jury in San Diego for his involvement in the kidnapping, hostage-taking, torture, and murder of M.A.R., an 18-year-old U.S. citizen. The jury reached its verdict after less than a day of deliberation following a seven-day trial. Patron was convicted on multiple counts, including Intentional Killing While Engaged in Drug Trafficking and Hostage Taking Resulting in Death.

Acting U.S. Attorney Andrew Haden remarked on the case: "This is a heartbreaking tragedy, where a young man lost his life, leaving his family shattered." He added that despite the ruthlessness of drug traffickers, "the commitment of the United States to the safety of its citizens" remains steadfast. Haden acknowledged the assistance from FBI San Diego and Mexican counterparts in bringing justice for this crime.

San Diego FBI Special Agent in Charge Stacey Moy also commented on the outcome: “Today’s verdict is an impactful outcome to a ruthless, vicious, and violent hostage taking and murder," emphasizing ongoing efforts against drug cartels that threaten American communities.

Patron's sentencing is scheduled for July 7, 2025, before U.S. District Judge William Q. Hayes.

The incident occurred when M.A.R. was abducted from a Tijuana hotel on May 29, 2020. He was subsequently beaten and tortured as ransom demands were made to his family before being killed six days later.

Evidence presented during the trial included surveillance footage showing Patron involved in the abduction and communication records detailing ransom negotiations with M.A.R.'s family.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Mario Peia and Alexandra F. Foster led the prosecution of this case against Brian Alexis Patron Lopez who also goes by Leobardo Garcia.

Patron faces severe penalties under charges related to drug trafficking and hostage-taking resulting in death with potential life imprisonment sentences for each charge.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation spearheaded this investigation as part of efforts under Operation Take Back America—a nationwide initiative targeting cartels and transnational criminal organizations threatening public safety through violent crimes.
